The powered speakers create a background hiss that can be noticeable in quiet rooms and they are very heavy.

The Mackie Mixer does the job well, it is small and light.

Difficult to get mic volume set up right without getting feedback.

Comments :

This is now the system that we take on the road. The powered mixer simplifies set up slightly, as no power is required for the speakers, and speaker volume etc; is only controlled by the mixer. The weight difference between the Alesis and Wharfedales is not as huge as it appears on paper, and the Wharfedales do produce a much meatier sound. The AKG  mics are a big step up in quality and the ability to select from 3 frequencies can be a life saver.

The biggest disappointment is the GigSkins bags, these can not be reccomended, the zips are failing and stitching coming apart and for this reason I would suggest buying speakers that have simple bags that fit neatly and allow access to the speaker handle directly... we haven't found these for the Alesis yet!
